Focus: 1 Timothy 4:8 - KJV
8. For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.
Psalms 37:4-11
It is good to exercise one’s body from time to time to keep the organs of the body functional and in good stead. Nonetheless, the exercise does not have the power to keep man eternally alive. But there is something that can keep us alive: it is being godly. Those who are godly enjoy the life here, whether pot-bellied or with six packs, and they also get the blessing to have life more abundantly in the life to come, which is eternity.
As enumerated in our reading in the Psalms, those who delight themselves in the Lord to do things that please Him, are on a journey to life. They are people who cease from anger and do no evil. They operate perpetually in love: love to their God and love to their neighbors. They who would forsake things on this side of eternity for God’s sake, will in this side get much more and, in the life to come, a forever life. As it is, bodily exercise cannot afford anyone all of these. Yet, God is looking for those who will take the profiting He offers.
What more do we need to say: the time spent in the gymnasium is not really wasted. But more time spent in learning God’s ways and acting thereupon lead to greater profit. Let us therefore, spend time to seek what God wants and do them that we may enjoy life fully on earth, and much more in eternity.
Please pray:
Father, I thank you for the grace to be godly. It is definitely not by my power but by your Spirit. Please continue to sustain me in godliness by your Spirit, in Jesus’ name. Let the gains embedded in godliness flow unto me from today, better than ever, in Jesus’ name. Take me, O Lord, from the far end of ungodliness to the forefront in godliness and good works from now, in Jesus’ name. Let this day bear unto me your goodness and mercy in all that I do, in Jesus’ name.
Please share with others. God bless you.
