14. Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not.
Matthew 5:43-48
The way the Lord made man is with feelings. Such feelings may lead to high emotions. For example, man is with capacity to love, hate or tolerate. When offenses come, the tendency is to hate the offender and at times want to hit back. One of the ways to hit back is to curse the perceived offender. However, such only happens with those who do not have the Lord’s DNA. Those that do have it are equipped with emotional intelligence such that they do not render evil for evil. When they are offended, they are known for forgiving their offenders. Even when the offender becomes so vile, they pray for the same rather than curse him. That is how they are able to show that indeed, they are the children of the Most-High. There must be a way to decipher between them and others.
It is true that Moses had counseled that we love our neighbor and hate our enemy; the position of our God is that we bless them that persecute us. We are never to destroy anyone. The Lord has given us power to tread on serpents and scorpions. When we use such power to curse a fellow man, we end up crushing the same and thereby destroying him. Meanwhile, God has not called us into the ministry of destruction which is of the devil, but that of reconciliation, which is Christ’s. if all we do is pray for those who pray for us, befriend those who befriend us and give to them that give to us, we have done nothing extraordinary: for these are the things the ordinary do. To be proper children of the father, we are expected to be different from the bunch, by being kind to them that detest us, knowing that they are only victims of the deceit of the enemy.
Beloved, as believers, we are children of the most high God, the one who allows the rain on both the righteous and the unrighteous; He makes the sun to shine on them all without discrimination. He would not keep the earth solid for the righteous and make it mir for the others. He is the God of all. Since we are His children, we ought to be like Him in all manner. Blessing those whom we assume are our lovers and cursing those we think are our offenders, takes us far away from the likeness of our father. The person whom we assume has offended us may not have taken any part of the action to heart, while we keep on hurting unnecessarily. Our health is premised upon having a pure heart like our father portends. Anything otherwise is a canker that eats up the fabrics of our existence. If, when we offended the Lord in our formative years, He had given us to curses, would we have been standing today? The mind of our father is therefore, that we, like Him, be holy in all manner of conversation by blessing only and not cursing, no matter our feelings.
SOLUTION: Please eschew bitterness in all its ramification. It is a trait of the enemy and not of God. Forgive those who hurt you, and bless them that persecute you; bless, curse not. That is the mind of God for His children. When you curse, you may be doing that to another child of God, unknowingly. Will God stand by and allow you destroy His heir?
Please pray: Father, please give me the grace to mortify my flesh in all circumstances, particularly in the face of provocation, in Jesus’ name. Do not let the enemy draw me ever into the ministry of destruction through offenses, in the name of Jesus. Help me to be a blessing to all and never curse anyone, no matter what, in Jesus’ name.
If you are blessed by this post, kindly share with your contacts, as well as others, that they may be blessed also. Thank you and may God bless you abundantly as you do so, in Jesus’ name.
